An Amazing Commencement Speech by an Amazing Comedian

An amazing commencement address by Conan O'Brien to Dartmouth's 2011 graduating class. Truly inspiring and chock full of wisdom. This is definitely up there next to Steve Job's 2005 Stanford Commencement Address also know as the “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish," speech. A favorite excerpt of mine is:

Niche famously said, whatever doesn't kill you will make you stronger. What he failed to stress is that it almost kills you! (16:59)

and the one that rings true to my heart:

It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique... your perceived failure can become a catalyst for profound reinvention. (20:53)

Movie Trailer: 50/50

Trailers are always fun though not too many make it here on adellelijah. Maybe we could make this could be a recurring theme?! Tuesday Trailer(movie) day!? This new film, 50/50, attempts to make the best of a dire situation. Mixing comedy with a hint of seriousness, Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, tell a story of friends helping each other out. Through good times and bad, Levitt's character learns how to deal with the ensuing flood of emotion that comes with beating cancer. We're definitely going to catch this flick.

Off topic, this does bring up a question: why can't Apple just allow people to embed directly from their website?! I know that they are the "exclusive" site to watch every trailer imaginable and spend countless hours doing so but it'd save some good cloud space right?

Bay to Breakers 100th Anniversary: Our Experience

Adelle and I decided to run the 100th Anniversary of San Francisco's Famous Bay to Breakers 12K 2 weeks ago and here's the report: (sorry it took so long and for that reason this post is extra long) New sponsorship, followed with a new ban of no alcohol on course or ridiculous drunkards running around, Zazzle and the city of San Francisco set out to reduce the mess and ridiculous amount of waste caused by this fanatical race.

The Day Before:

Zazzle held a two day expo where  Saturday would feature a guest appearance by non other than Mr. Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes.  We, and by we, I meant me, had to get a photo taken with him.  Adelle and our friend Joyce waited patiently in line while I grabbed our race bibs, chips and stuff, then Joyce took this great shot!

He's super nice and was easy to talk to.  He would have kept on talking too but I wanted to keep the line moving so I courteously ended the conversation and left.  Interestingly enough, he just finished running across the continental United States four days prior to this appearance!  What an athlete!  Another tidbit of information would be he's amazing 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days in 50 different states.  If you want to see and read more of his stuff, his wiki is quite extensive too! (Wiki: Dean Karnazes)

The expo itself was setup well, a little chaotic for my taste, but if you wanted to get in and out, it was definitely easy.  We bought some new running belts and Adelle even bought some new Nike Free Livestrong Editions for a great price!  Adelle will review at a later time, hopefully, but until then, that's the two cents.  Overall, Zazzle did a great job for the first time hosting such a large and legendary event.

Following up with a great lunch and carb-load dinner, we ended the night early in preparation for the 12K. Adelle and I actually thought of running this race for reals for little did we know that there would be a lot of walking on the course slowing our pace.  I mean, it's not like we are professional runners or ones that have a set time in mind but we wanted to give it our best.  We're "organized" type folk so this is our bed the night before.

The Race:

Getting to the start line was literally a breeze; cold and forecasted to rain. So Adelle and I hurried up a little bit to warm up and got into our coral with time to spare. It was madness with tortillas flying around, naked men and women (mostly men) amazing costumes and fun. When do you ever see people excited to run 12K that early in the morning!?

Along the race, we ran, we walked, we spectated, smelt some medicinal drugs being shared amongst citizens and were just in awe at the awesomeness that this race still was minus the keg running athletes. There was alcohol sporadically throughout the race, policemen trying their best to take the bottle away, but the porta potties along the course were far and few between. Water stations were present but more not operated that well. All in all, a good race with a mediocre pace. Adelle and I haven't ran a race since the 2007 St. Patrick's Day 10K in San Diego so this was a fun one keep pace together.

All the way through the end, we finished strong by the beach and got our cool finisher medals. It was the first time too that Bay to Breakers was handing 'em out, so yes, we feel special. There was even some small time groups selling food at the finish line so we of course indulged. Hand outs were a plenty and the post race party was a blast. We couldn't really stay long because we had to checkout of our hotel by noon so that was that. Although, along the way back to the car that Marella was so nice to pick us up in, we saw a filipino dood sporting a Manny Pacquiao outfit and that was definitely one of the best we all seen. Good job Mr. Impersonator! Sorry no pic because all of us were just too shy.

Here are screen caps of the waaay too expensive race photos. How come all these race pic companies charge so much anyways?

Running Data: Bib # 46246: 1:26:01 // Bib # 46247 1:26:02 You can actually even see some video of both Adelle and I crossing the finish line at the same time by just typing in our bib numbers on the following link for the actual Bay to Breakers 2011 Live Results Page. (link)

I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but we have officially switched to using tap tap tap's amazing "ultimate photo app" for the iPhone called Camera+. You should definitely check it out. If anything, you can check out adellelijah's stream via campl.us:adellelijah. Instagram is also fun, but there's a bug for iOS 4.1 users that wasn't fixed so I stopped using it. Plus, Camera+ is packed with A LOT more features for those amateur photographers in us. Download it now...we're suporters!

If you want to see some pictures of the craziness along with videos, I found this is an awesome recap. (via nonstophonolulu)

Why I Love My Air

Seven months ago, I made my first big electronic purchase EVER, a new MacBook Air. After years of hand-me-downs from my husband (1 custom desktop, 1 HP dv1000 laptop, and an IBM T43) I was definitely overdue for a new computer. The last laptop I was used was the world’s heaviest and bulkiest laptop that did the job, just not fast enough. I didn't know what flash storage was, unibody construction and all that fancy mumbo-jumbo but I knew that it was pretty. Note: I was only familiar with Mac OS X from using my husband's MacBook Pro or his previous Titanium.

I love that my Air is so lightweight, fast and of course, pretty! My laptop is portable enough to slip it into my work bag with room for everything else I need. It's so fast that I can just open it up and pick up right where I left off. And you can’t mess with the overall look of the Air. It’s so modern and sleek, but still maintains a classic look with a full sized keyboard & Apple's Multi-Touch Trackpad.

As far as my transition from the PC world to the Mac, it was pretty smooth. Being a forever student and knowing papers had to be done, I didn’t know how I would fare with Apple’s version of their word processor names Pages. After a few frustrated calls to my husband, I was able to get through a few documents and familiarize myself with the general layout. Although I still prefer Microsoft Word, Pages is quite intuitive and user friendly.

My MacBook Air was definitely a smart purchase and has officially converted me to becoming an avid Mac user. Now I hear that they are going to update it already? Boo.

My specs of the one I bought are: 13" 2.13 Intel 4GB RAM 256GB flash storage. The highest model in the bunch and I love it!

Kickstarter - Teardrop: the perfect cup of tea, every time

It's amazing what kind of projects and ideas one can develop and see to production with programs like Kickstarter. Today isn't any different. After looking for other projects around Kickstarter, adellelijah has found another amazing product to back. Check out the "Teardrop" project by Michael DiStefano. At 8% backing w/ 28 days to go, it seems like it's going to have a 4th period type finish, but I'm sure that after the public backing from Kevin Rose on twitter, you have to think that some of his 1.2 million followers have the funds to make this a successful project. If this post helps you realize Mr. DiStefano's dream, please leave a comment. Shoot, even if you are a fan of tea, an avid tea drinker or just love being a wannabe "Angel Investor" like adellelijah, please support Teardrop. For only $40, you get this amazing idea and at a 20% off retail price.

Watch the video below for an explanation of the magic. Self contained timer, never let it over-steep (a tea drinker's dream so that he / she can leave and let be while in the shower) and aesthetically pleasingly! If you feel extra nice and angel like, buy it for your mom for Mother's Day! Cheers!

How do you wake up?!

Most people, read: myself and my wife, have annoying ring tones or music that helps us wake up in the morning. Of course, with that annoying tone comes the dragging of feet and impolite curses, but it's all in a morning right? We'll call it the rude awakening.

Now, with this new "Acoustic Alarm by Jamie McMahon," you can set the tone and have it strum back to reality. Check out the video below! You can also check out Jamie McMahon's website here.

the Legendary White iPhone 4 Case Giveaway

After nine excruciating months, Apple has finally gotten the right mix of materials in order and has released the once mythological, almost classified as vaporware, white iPhone 4! To think that I almost waited this long for the white version?! Yes, I still want the white iPhone 4 so I'm also willing to say that I'll trade anyone with buyers remorse for my 32GB black iPhone 4 so just drop me a line but back to the facts. Selling for the same price as the black iPhone 4, you'll get the same device albeit with some minor changes to the proximity sensor as well as a purported minor increase in thickness?! Although not mentioned or re-specified by Apple, these new white Apple iPhone 4s should fit all cases alike and in celebration, we're going to give away two brand new awesome iPhone 4 cases!

From left to right, check out the Scosche bandEDGE g4 or the Casemate Horizontal Hipster with Black Lining both made for the iPhone 4 GSM. I believe that they should also fit the Verizon / CDMA variant but unfortunately, I cannot guarantee that it will. Any who, why not just enter cause it's a freaking free giveaway?

No you don't have to own the white iPhone 4 to be elegible or even own an iPhone 4. All you have to do to enter is to tweet this website and mention the giveaway, leave a comment or post / writing a blog that leads back to this post. If you do all three, you receive three entries! (I loved the method that Ray Maker uses on his DCRainMaker Blog that I thought I'd incorporate the same methodology so here it is!) Just make sure to tell me how how many entries you've entered in the comments below and I'll be sure to give you all the credit. Entires are required to be in by Saturday May 7th, 2011 at 11:59PM Pacific and goodluck!

Push Pop Press' First Release: Our Choice by Al Gore

A coupe of months ago, adellelijah posted an article dubbing Push Pop Press as the creator of the next digital book. After months of development and available for purchase ($4.99 on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch), Push Pop Press has released it's first full featured iPad book / application called "Our Choice" by non other than Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Academy Award Winner and past Vice-President Al Gore. Also known for his full featured film, An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore has "conveniently" teamed up with Push Pop Press to present to us new groundbreaking studies, insights and solutions to our current worldwide dilemma. Not only has this app / book been fun to browse and navigate but it takes learning to a whole new level. Providing interactive graphics, entertaining animations and even lending his voice for various narratives, Al Gore reaches out to us showing us really what Push Pop Press can do. The information itself, we'll just call it fluff material for showing off the awesomeness that Push Pop Press can deliver but that's just my opinion. There's really great stuff in there no doubt, but I can't wait to see more books that take full advantage of this technology. What I really can't wait and see are textbooks that fully take advantage of this amazing publisher or action books or who knows...pick your own story types from years ago!

Here's a TED Talk that features Push Pop Press presenting the book. It's quite amazing!

Go Padres!

Preventing a sweep by the Cincinnati Reds, the San Diego Padres, with bases loaded at the bottom of the ninth pulled through! And just in case you're wondering, YES...this is worth a blog post!

Adelle and I (Elijah) hold some awesome 2011 Season tickets to the San Diego Padres and will be holding giveaways now and then. If you are interested in purchasing a pair for a particular game, send an email to us@adellelijah.com and we'll get back to you with what we have and don't have left.

Run Like a Girl

I was checking my email one day and saw a message I for sure thought was spam. It was from Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego, confirming my registration. Huh? So, it turns out, my hubby signed me up for the half marathon without my knowing. Thanks, babe. I’ve always thought about running a marathon, but being a non-runner, it mostly stayed just a thought, until now. Check out the course map! I haven’t prepared much for the half - work, clinical and life, has gotten in the way of my so called “training.” But as the date quickly approaches, I hope my training becomes more rigorous. A few things come to mind as I prepare for the big race - race hair and race clothes.

Elijah and I went for a long run last weekend and one of my concerns was not our mile pace, but if my ponytail would stay intact throughout the run. I pulled it up in a ponytail, braided it and pinned it back. Halfway through our 6 mile run, it had already come undone, ugh! Since then, I’ve been looking at runner hairstyles and have been making mental notes of how to tie my hair back appropriately for the big day. I’ll be testing them out in weeks to come.

Last week’s run also made me acutely aware that I do not have adequate racing attire. My friend and I were at the Nike store this past week and I saw many cute and comfortable options there - shoes, shorts, socks - oh my! I will have to go back with the hubby to get his opinion, because we all know he’s into that kind of stuff.

With only 9 weeks left until the Rock ‘n’ Roll, the hubby and I plan to increase the miles we run per week, condition our bodies (I’ve already convinced him to take hot yoga with me this week), and get a good race pace going. It’s going to be an awesome experience for both of us.

It's on pace for another sellout year, so run the full with my hubby or jog next to me in the half! See you there! (register here)

Nothing like Baseball Season

For the San Diego Padres, opening the season at St. Louis couldn't have been more exciting! (box score) Great plays by Cameron Maybin / @CamMaybin including an awesome tying Home Run, Nick Hundley with 2 RBIs, and Heath Bell gets the first save of the 2011 season...definitely a great way to start the season. Five runs, eight hits, 11 innings! YEAH...that's what I'm talking about! You even have Albert Pujols going 0-5 and contributing 3 grounders resulting in 3 double plays! How awesome!

Admittedly, adellelijah has some awesome season tickets this year and can't wait for the home opener against the World Champion San Francisco Giants on April 5th. Being in the heart of downtown and only 4 blocks away from Petco Park, it's just too easy to be excited for the year. The Padres are poised to make a big impact this year up from a phenomenal 2010 season and we sure do have high hopes! Here's the replay of Maybin's Home Run as a San Diego Padre! (video link)

Here's to the 2011 season!

As of this afternoon, they're even going up on eBay with prices of up to a 160% markup! We unfortunately didn't get our hands one, but hey, maybe when the iPad 3 comes up this Fall. (by the oatmeal) Grab 5 Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth (And Other Useful Guides), an awesome book, too while you're at it!

Here's your chance to support an amazing film by Gary Hustwit as he completes his Design Trilogy with the making of "Urbanized." Currently at 85% of his goal, on Kickstarter, Mr. Hustwit offers a whole array of types of deals ranging from $10 to $5000 for a private screening. Just for a mere $400, you and your company can be listed in Mr. Hustwit's credits under the "Special Thanks" segment which I think is a steal! Check out the video below and support his Kickstarter!

Gary's two other amazing films, Helvetica and Objectified, have received amazing reviews and you too should check them out now. Heck, I'd go for the Blu-ray Design Trilogy which includes the hardcover book and other contents sign by the man himself for a Kickstarter pledge of $125! We have just under 13 days to help the guy out! What's not to love?

What shows do you watch?

Back in September of 2009, a new show debuted on NBC providing comical relief to the dreary primetime slot. Since then, Community has maintained it's spectrum of laughs and even has garnered popular cast webisodes, the most popular staring Danny Pudi's Abed & Donald Glover's Troy on various projects such A/V Department. Both have taken their characters to new heights. Now, with the popular Genre Swap meme on Tumblr, an awesome trailer has debuted creating Community: the Murder Mystery. What if the show was a drama? Watch and be inspired!

Follow Danny Pudi on Twitter here and Donald Glover here. You can even check out iamdoanld.com for all the goodness that he has to offer.

And They're Off!

Being held on May 15th, Bay to Breakers is set to be the premier running event of the year in the Bay Area. It'll be our first attempt running around the hills of San Francisco.

Today, Adelle and Elijah officially registered for San Francisco's 100th Anniversary Bay to Breakers 12K. We haven't done too many long runs, but on the way to training for the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Half and Full Marathon, we thought that this would be a fun way to keep on trucking. And we get to see friends, hang out and just have fun outside of San Diego! Come run with us and register while you can. (we ended up in Corral "F") It's bound to sell out and plus they're giving away finisher medals! Go register now!

Listen to Three Amazing Stories from Steve Jobs

Made public a little while back, I thought that I should share it with you all here on this blog, adellelijah. I have to admit that it is very inspiring and let's face it, I'm a big fan. Steve Jobs speaks really well, holds my attention and is just a force that we should all listen to. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from various parts of the speech I that I want to share:

"Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards." "Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith." "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."

There's also this which I take to heart:

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."

Watch and be truly inspired! Do something that you believe in to be truly amazing today. In its entirety, Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford Commencement Address also know as the "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. Speech"

You can check out the full text of Steve Jobs' Commencement address here.

TED Talks: Patricia Kuhl - The linguistic genius of babies

Babies' brains are "...nothing short of rocket science." Check out what goes on during critical periods of development and the variations of language presented in both English and Japanese. As always, very, very fascinating. Over the next few days, I'll be posting some goodness from the various TED Talks that I've been watching. Back in January, I posted one about getting more sleep and how it equates to success by Arianna Huffington. If you haven't already seen it, check it out as well.
